Dear Authorities,
I recently informed you that the Australian Government, through AusAID, has made its Australia Awards program of scholarships available to students from Latin America. The particular scholarship on offer is an Australian Leadership Award Scholarship (ALAS) which is for post-graduate study and includes a Leadership Development component.
AusAID has recently increased the number of scholarships available for commencement in 2011. As a result, existing applicants and new applicants who join the process, now have an improved chance of being successful. I would also like to draw your attention to a further arrangement which we believe will enable more applications to be considered. I invite you to pass this information on to individuals who may be interested.
AusAID has decided to introduce a later closing date for completion of applications. This new closing date is 30 July. This means that those individuals who are unable to complete their ALAS application electronically by the existing deadline of 30 June (for example because they have not received an Unconditional Letter of Offer from an institution) will be invited at that point to continue with a hard copy application which must be submitted by 30 July. If such applicants are able to complete all the requirements in hard copy and provide the documentation to me at the Australian Embassy in Santiago de Chile by this new date, they will become eligible to compete for a scholarship that is very similar to an ALAS, but which does not contain the Leadership Development component.
I am writing to all the applicants who are currently in the process of lodging their applications electronically (and those who begin lodging before 30 June), to explain the new opportunity and the options it allows. Existing applicants now have two choices: they can meet the first deadline of 30 June for electronic submission and be eligible for the ALAS that contains the Leadership Component, or they can meet the later deadline of 30 July for hard copy submission and be eligible for an award without the Leadership Component.
AusAID is seeking your assistance to encourage any potential applicants who were discouraged by the 30 June deadline and who do not seek the Leadership Component to now begin lodging an application on OASIS. By registering on OASIS now, new applicants become visible to me. This will enable me to contact them directly to provide instructions regarding hard copy lodgement for the second deadline. AusAID is particularly interested in encouraging applications for study that would equip graduates to contribute to rural development, in areas such as agriculture, food security, health infrastructure and services (e.g. water supply, sanitation, maternal and child health) and community development (including rural financial services).
In brief
What do I need to do now to apply for an ALA Scholarship?
Before 30 June, apply on-line on web page www.ausaid.gov.au/scholar/ala_apply.cfm
Before 30 July, apply with a hard-copy application sent to:
(Note: for this method of application you also need to have commenced an online application before 30 June on web page www.ausaid.gov.au/scholar/ala_apply.cfm , where you can also check the required documentation to be submitted via traditional mail to)
